Almost all of the materials in this collection were generated by Gough's career as a temperance lecturer. The journals, diaries, and engagement books record his lecturing schedules, numbers of converts, amount of compensation, etc. The information in the diaries was probably recopied into the three volumes of journals. The volume entitled "Record J.B.G.," is the only volume that has much personal reflection and recollection. There are elaborately bound memorial volumes presented to Gough by grateful temperance workers and books of signatures of those who were converted by Gough to total abstinence. The folders of lectures include some of his addresses on topics other than temperance.
